We’re getting our house repainted, so I took down one of the hideous lamps in the bathroom to uncover this. It was certainly a choice, but I think this may have been original to the house (ca 1940). While it’s a bit much, we’re trying to be authentic to the original vision of the house. Does anyone know if it’s possible to find old wallpapers? Are there individuals or companies that can match designs like this?

Doubtful on the wallpaper but that original wiring worries me. Do you have plenty of smoke detectors?

Oh yeah. Where it crumbles, I cut back. The wiring inside the metal armor has all still been in great condition, but I’ve been replacing it where I can. For the most part, they installed things really well.

I’d like to replace all my breakers with AFCI, but I don’t know if I’m just going to kick myself for doing that… There have been some “interesting” upgrades after a previous owner switched to 200 A service.

Yeah I don’t know a lot about electrical but I work in insurance and have seen quite a few “origin and cause” fire reports with pics of wiring that looks a bit like that. Sounds like you know what you’re doing 😊

For the wallpaper you could have a custom print run done. I own a small printing company in the UK and we do bespoke wallpapers from time to time. Not sure where you’re based, but I’m sure you could find someone localish to you.

With regards to the design, unless you happen to find an exact match, which I’m doubtful of, you would end up just ‘taking a guess’ to create the rest of it. Or adapt the design into something you like yourself so you have old and new both in one.
