Irritating. I’m trying to extricate myself from Google entirely, but in the meantime I’ve used uBlock Origin to block the notification.
With what rule? I looked and it didn’t seem like there was a good way to target it.
Should be able to click and block it in the Element Picker mode.
Right click, block element.
For most cases that works fine, but it looks like the xpath uses generated identifiers, so any time they push a change to the Gmail UI the rule won’t match any more.
Can you go up a level and block more vaguely?
No, same issue with the parent elements. Eventually you’d be blocking too widely and block the whole thing.

Proton mail is a good option
There’s alot of good options (prices are for the base/cheapest premium plan plan) :
- Tutanota
- 3€/m billed yearly
- Protonmail
- $4/m billed yearly
- Mailbox.org
- 1€/m billed yearly
- Posteo.de
- 1€/m billed yearly
- Fastmail
- $3/m billed yearly
- Runbox
- $1.66/m billed yearly ($19.95)
All are good options, do your own research though.
protonmail operates on a fremium service, you don’t have to pay. I highly recommend the paid options though… and if you happen to have a webdomain, they’ll manage an email server for you (which is a pain in the ass… and totally worth it. They do a good job.)
I mentioned in my comment that the prices were based off the cheapest “premium” plan. If I were to include freemium, tutanota, mailbox.org and others would also be free.
Hm, really? I might have to look at that. I’d love my own email domain
I would like to use my domain for that, but was always wondering if I could do that while using my domain and other non mail subdomains on another server
Yes an MX dns entry only applies to email, you can have other entries (A, AAAA) for a normal server.
So I would add a MX entry and set it to the ip of the Proton Mail Server?
Yes, the extra details are documented here https://proton.me/support/custom-domain
- Tutanota
Proton. Completely satisfied with it. Highly recommend.
I like proton. It’s nice to use and I was quick enough to have [email protected]
Enhanced Safe Browsing was released in 2007 as an upgrade to Google’s standard Safe Browsing feature that warns users when they visit known phishing and malware sites.
That’s gotta be a typo. Gmail itself came out in 2004, and I doubt that “Safe Browsing” and then “Enhanced Safe Browsing” both came out in the first three years.
I’m guessing it’s supposed to be 2017?
Regardless of when it came out, the nagging prompts sure are annoying.
Thunderbird/FreeMail?
I don’t use the website much at all anymore
People still use gmail?
Of course they do… Most organizations in the US are using Gmail at this point. I don’t even know a single person in my life that doesn’t.
Most orgs in the US use 365. https://blogs.gartner.com/craig-roth/2021/07/30/should-microsoft-office-365-be-afraid-of-google-workspace-gartner-2020-market-share-report-says/ says Microsoft has “almost 90%”.
I don’t use Gmail, my wife don’t use Gmail, I can’t think of any friends that use Gmail. People in my circle don’t see value in trading privacy for a “free” email account. I use fastmail, been very pleased.
Virtually every company public and private in the US use Gmail or Outlook. Interesting that your circle is using alternatives but you’re still very much an outlier. Like to an extreme that’s very surprising to hear. For personal use nearly 90%+ of global market share splits between Gmail and Apple with nearly 60% of email in the US being Gmail based and Apple holding most of the rest.
You call me an outlier, I say that I am not a sheep.
Well, either way it’s clear you’re feeling very smug about it.
Yeah you really showed the man what’s what by using a different email client
Every single person I know uses gmail here where I live. I’m the local IT guy here in my small village in the UK and I’ve not come across anyone NOT using gmail
That’s sad. Too bad the entire village doesn’t know that Google is shite and that there are better options available.
But it’s not shit for them. It’s always works, never down, works fast, and reliably on the computers/laptops/phones etc. Most people could not give a monkies if they are tracking cookies. It’s easy to use so they have no reason to move away. Not everyone is a tech nerd who looks for other solutions which are normally more complex. They just want something that works, and that is why gmail/google is popular.
