This is the best summary I could come up with:

The script was inspired by blockbusters such as Weird Science and Bruce Almighty, with a teen comedy vibe reminiscent of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin films, Lynch says.

“A kid playing God leads to some big, weird scenes – super-insane versions of his school and family, with really cool visuals.”

“I was raked over the coals when it was announced … they didn’t reveal the story, so people figured it was a cash grab, I suppose,” says Lynch.

But it was intended to be full of references that fans would enjoy, with Lynch flying to EA’s headquarters in California to work with the team on the film.

The recurring characters, expansion packs, intricate family trees, missing persons and aliens make up a sprawling multiverse of timelines and subplots.

“I thought it would be kind of like The Fast and the Furious, but with Scott Pilgrimesque snowboarding sequences and the greatest soundtrack of all time … Someone should call me on that one.

That original pitch is so off the rails and only ever so tenuously connected to the game. The bully character adds monsters? What’s the demo for this, children? When’s the last time you saw a kid playing Sims?

The idea that it was called a cash grab just because people didn’t know the plot is fucking hilarious. It sounds like it would’ve been complete schlock.

This reminds me of a podcast I listened to recently where they revealed someone tried to make a film of The Far Side cartoons. From the sounds of it, it was literally the cartoons realised in live action. There was even a test shoot and you can find a couple of photos online. Obviously the project was canned.

No idea how that film could’ve worked.

You would assume that Barbie would be the tougher one, considering it already had a media empire. Sims is really just the ultimate incarnation of SimCity.
