He who controls the spice, controls the Monopoly game…. Legendary has just introduced a new version of the classic game Monopoly, with a Dune theme.

I remember for many years there was a stark lack of Dune video games because the Herbert estate felt like they degraded the dignity of the property. At the time, I thought it was absurd.

But now… now I see what they were worried about, but it wasn’t video games that they should have worried about.

Monopoly is a game I wish would just fade out of existence. I say this both as a game collector, and a Local Game Shop owner.

And was created to show the perils of unchecked capitalism, not encourage them. My own mother physically chucked the whole thing into the backyard during an argument between my brothers & I when we were young. Never again, Monopoly, you insidious PoS. 🤌🏼

Because it’s one of those games that would much better be replaced for its main use case. Imagine if something like catan filled the same cultural role of “game you play when family is over”

Monopoly is long, victory is ensured early and finished slowly

If played with no house rules, monopoly is a quick game. And I would much rather a Dune Catan game. Star Trek Catan is a fun variant.

This is like painting a Pontiac Aztec to be a Ferrari. Sure it looks cool but at the end of the day it’s still a shitty car.

Just get/force some friends to play the 1979 (or 2019 re-release) dune board game, after the third time you play it, it will be the best gaming experience you’ll ever have.

Hard pass. Play any of the other significantly better Dune games. I hear Dune: Imperium is fantastic, especially with the Rise of Ix expansion, and the 2019 re-release of the OG game (just called Dune) is very in-depth. The 2021 spin-off, Dune: A Game of Conquest and Diplomacy isn’t as well rated, but I guarantee it’s 1000x better than another Monopoly game with a skin on it.
