Now when a user reports a troll, the report goes to the moderators of the community. But in special cases the admins of the user instances should deal with banning. So the admins of the community instances have to deal with reports, but the solution is at the hand of the user instance admins. It’s the same as dealing with users from other instances, but an edge case.

My recommendations would be something like this: (I’m just a random user, so it’s just my point of view)

• Shut down the fully inactive instances. Noone will even even notice it
• Merge the semi active communities to a handful of instances, like sports and technology… . I’ve seen active communities move instances, it would be possible, take a look how !europe@feddit.de migrated to !europe@feddit.org. Give enough time for subscribers to notice and subscribe to the new one.
• Allow registration of moderators on these instances, so they can work around the current limitations of moderation tools. Maybe an invite only solution or something like this.
• You could find help more easily if you look for admins for 3-4 instances instead of for 18 instances.

This would be useful for you and other admins, because you would have to admin much less number of instances. They would be still considered small instances, compared to big one, so you still not at the “too big to fail” level. For users it would help community discovery, there are overlap between followers of similar topics, e.g. I have friends who follow both European football and NBA at the same time, I read both selfhosting related topics and about general tech support, etc…

I don’t like this kind of community/user instance because 2 instances have to deal with the same problem. E.g. a rogue user can troll on most community instances until they are banned by their user instance.

The instance fragmentatios is not as big issue as it’s quite easy to create new accounts. There was a thread about this some days ago here, I also use different accounts on different instances for different topics.

If a moderator is from a different instance, can they effectively moderate? So isn’t it a problem if all moderators would be from different instances?

I remember after the exodus community discovery in Lemmy was hard, and it made sense to create instances like these. But nowadays with Lemmy Explorer and with multiple community promo communities I think it’s not really hard to find the topics you are interested in.

Xiaomi’s reasoning was they produce different phones for Chinese internal and for global market. A lot of scalpers bought the Chinese version, took it outside China, flashed a global rom and sold it. The good part, is that bootloader opening workflow was not the best, but at least acceptable for me compared to Asus’. You had to register your IMEI with a Xiaomi account, than wait a week and you could open it (This was the workflow like 5 years ago, and I still have the same phone, I don’t know if they changed it). This way they could slow down the scalpers, and they could see if someone want to mass open a lot of phones at the same time.

No, it’s just remote. Remote desktop is now also called Windows, also the operating system you are connecting to is called Windows.

Gnome has relatively good rdp support, so with this you could use Windows (the app) on Windows (the os) to connect to you Linux machine running Gnome.

I can confirm. Updated on my laptop and every extension works so far.

I wrote “by osm supporting companies”. The companies behind overture are also supporting osm, that’s what I wanted to write, it’s not necessarily a competitive project, simply data quality is different, but there is an overlap between supporting companies.

Overture maps is a project by osm supporting companies to present their fake and/or low quality data to their shareholders. They can’t import it to osm because of the aformentiones reasons, so they created their own osm with blackjack and hookers.

Roads and landuse data is from osm so it it’s the same. Building contours based on osm and from some MS ai tool, similar to what you get in the RapId editor. At some places it’s good, in dense cities it’s unusable, and there are a lot of false positives, fake buildings on lakes and rivers, etc. Shops and POIs are from Facebook, a lot of them are at the wrong position or they not exist anymore, duplicates and jokes etc.

So as I see, it’s not usable by itself for anything. But it’s license is compatible to osm, so you can freely copy from there. I used it to check validity of osm notes. Facebook via this allowed us to copy data from any page, it was a grey area before. Here where I live a lot of shops don’t have a website only a FB page, and it wasn’t clear if you can copy phone numbers, email addresses from there. Now the same data is available in overture

Some more details on the update frequency of services and maps I use:

• After you upload something, it changes the database instantly.
• Things getting data directly from there should also update near instantly, like when you download in JOSM.
• The update delay of the raster map on openstreetmap.org depends on the zoom level. More zoomed in tiles update near instantly, lower zoom levels are updated weekly, monthly. Coastine is a special element, it doesn’t update with others, as it’s really resource intensive. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Coastline
• Queries on Overpass-turbo.eu have a delay of 6-10 minutes.
• Afaik StreetCompete quests are near instant, at the time you download them, but the base map updates only monthly, I read this in some forum, not sure.
• Organic maps usually monthly. Map updates are tied to app updates, so sometimes they miss some month.
• Magic Earth usually monthly, but sometimes they skip one or two. It’s annoying for me, because I use this for car navigation usually. The streets I use frequently are perfect now, but once I made a typo accidentally on a destination sign, and I fixed it some days later as I noticed while driving there, but ME didn’t updated its map for like 3 months after that, and I was always reminded to my typo I already fixed, ahhh…
