I was hoping those 5595 spam communities a disgruntled lemmy.world created had finally been deleted, but it’s not that.
The data is published about 4 times a day, and there’s a bit of variance each day, but not as much as the latest difference.
lemmy.fmhy.ml is down and all its communities are obviously missing as well. That might be it
lemmy.fmhy.ml is 1 instance, which had about 340 communities, so that’s some it, yeah.
My understanding is that all free .ml instances got removed as well - could be a sizeable chunk.
Of the missing instances, fmhy is the only .ml instance.
I’m starting to think it’s more because of servers falling over recently (e.g. 530 communities on sh.itjust.works, 370 communities on pornlemmy.com, and 380 communities on exploding-heads.com)
I’ve deleted over 4000 communities today 😁
Yay! Those communities made working with the data from Lemmyverse a right pain.
And here’s the culprit!
I wonder how many of those instances are single user instances and the numbers going up and down so sharply are curious people spinning up instances, getting bored and killing them once they get bored. I’d like to be able to see how much other platforms in the fediverse fluctuate
The instances on the list are only ones with communities on them. The website is currently showing 1251 instances for today, so I assume that includes single-user instances
Wait what; how could 10% of the instances just disappear?!
People gave it a shot and shut down their servers. Or farmbots moving to something else
