Keep in mind that your Google results are probably highly personalized. For instance, I tried googling that exact phrase (in a private window), and Lemmy doesnt appear for me at all.
This was the first thing that came to my mind. So I tried again, using a VPN (exit server in the USA) and an incognito window. That screenshot came from that result.
Oh weird, fair play to you then!
Yeah, my personalized content probably wasn’t so personalized. Still, let’s wait to see the results of other people here in this thread.
I got it as 2nd result too! But, I also got this post as the 3rd result ☠️ https://i.imgur.com/hb1QTyg.png
But did you try it from a different computer? While wearing a fake mustache? And typing with a fake french accent? Google is watching!
Damnit…
me typing wit a French accent to throw Ze Man off my trail
Sacré bleu!
You love to see it!
While probably a valid enough test, keep in mind Google’s fingerprinting goes well beyond IP and what incognito applies. There’s a reason Tor Browser changes things like browser window dimensions every time you open it.
Can confirm, I got it as the third result on mobile if in incognito. Don’t actually get the result without being in incognito which is odd, but it’s mobile too so results are always a bit different.
Regardless, awesome to see that it’s up there at all!!
your browser fingerprint can also tell them who you are.
4th result on duckduckgo via mull on a private tab with a vpn on for me
Edit: I’ll whip out mullvad browser when I get home
Edit: having trouble connecting to mullvads dns for some reason will try later
Edit #3: 3rd search result
3rd for me on duckduckgo. Reddit didn’t even show.
And if they really decide to ban Google search indexing, Reddit will be permanently wiped from the face of the internet. It’s like going full stealth mode.
Lemmy was the 5th result for me in private mode, just after youtube
5th and 6th (different lemmy instance) results for me on Kagi

At the very least, I’m sure they track the usual fingerprinting - geolocation etc.
If Reddit goes through with their threat of removing their links from Google, then Lemmy will definitely win.
Please, for the love of the internet, never feel like you can’t contribute and keep things fun, interesting, and completely weird. That’s how we take back what we all love.
… and while there’s no reason to state the obvious I’ll say it anyway. Fuck spez
If Reddit goes through with their threat of removing their links from Google
Why the hell would they do that?
It’s part of blocking 3rd party indexers because they think they’re like tiktok, not a library
The only reason I visit Reddit anymore is because it’s a vast sea of human experience and knowledge. Usually I just search Google with “[topic I’m interested in learning about] site:reddit.com”.
I’m honestly surprised someone at this point hasn’t just ported over all the comments from Reddit over to Lemmy, since they’re basically public domain comments from the human species that Reddit is just storing. IANAL.
Probably because it’d take a ton of time and money (because of API limits and costs), and it’d potentially disrupt Lemmy too much.
Reddit is a massive site, as far as how much content it’s stored over the years.
I assumed that the people over in the DataHoarder communities had archives running this whole time. There’s probably data out there somewhere, it’s a matter of getting it into a usable hosted state
Probably this https://the-eye.eu/redarcs/
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen some huge, semi-complete datasets of the site somewhere. Maybe the-eye has something? That would ease the process, since the content has already been hoarded.
Also, the new posts of some subreddits are being copied live to the equivalent Lemmy communities by bots made for that purpose.
Some communities do
Spez gonna spez
Spez gunna spaz
These tech freaks have a mercantilist, zero-sum view of how the web works: any link elsewhere is bad and anyone else profiting is your loss. They didn’t use to think this way but have gradually built a bubble around themselves over time, losing all perspective of their own users in the process. This also explains the move of this tech cohort to the regressive right wing.
Something to do with Reddit asking big tech companies to pay for AI training on its contents.
Only Elon Musk is that stupid. Empty threats.

Now do it with DuckDuckGo

Wonder if the overlap of users makes Lemmy rank higher on DDG?
I’ve yet to see Lemmy appear once in my DDG results… 😔
4th result!
Third for me, and similarly no Re**it. Well done!

This is amazing. If we can overtake Reddit in search indexing—or even just show up alongside it like this we’re completely set.
Futurama has one of the bigger communities on here. Lemmy needs more dedicated communities centered around a certain franchises, like Baldurs Gate or Futurama or live-action One Piece.
Sorry for the confusions, the ones I listed were for communities that are already a decent size ;)
I mean, they’re not going to magically appear without people engaging…
Definitely. Any subjects where people search for interests or for answers to questions. Google sucks so much ass now that I got into the habit of just using it to search Reddit for answers. Showing people it’s worth doing the same with Lemmy will be huge.
Made the full switch a couple days ago and already don’t miss reddit at all. The community is smaller, yes, but that lends itself to better, more engaged discussion. People are here because they want to be not because its the only place offered.
I think you misspelled enraged.
There’s no engaged discussion on here. If you have any opinion about paying for services, using Windows, or driving a car, you’ll be downvoted and attacked lmao.
I can’t say I’ve experienced any of those things. Not saying they don’t happen though, just saying I’ve had some good interactions about a variety of topics.
Or evidence that disproves a claim made about why any of these are bad.
Man, i joined lemmy about 2 months ago and because there are no free apps for reddit i haven’t logged on there since then. Once people understand the instances they will feel at home.
There are some amazing apps and even web apps now
the era of the big corpo monosite has made people forget what it’s like to have more than one website, and even before that era websites didn’t really talk to one another all that much. with time people will learn, and the ones who can’t will drown in botspam on the decaying husks of corposites
End Credits: Blade Runner

Fingers crossed that version 0.19 will bring more users on board 🥺
I doubt anyone is hanging on for mostly technical / security changes in 0.19. The best way to improve uptake is to remove all the sand from the signup process which as it stands would scare away many people.
That it is also part of upcoming updates
What is happening exactly?
Since no one asked, here’s Yahoo
Long, long screenshot
How big are your pockets???
Long long pockets
You made me spit out my coffee all over my brand new keyboard
still above reddit
still came before reddit tho

Appreciate the attempt, but tiny pics, can’t read.
I tapped it and viewed full size no problem
Didn’t work for me when I tried the same. Using the Lemmy.World web site, not an app.
Edit: Just tried in a desktop browser, didn’t work either.
Right click: open image in new tab, then zoom with CTRL and + or CTRL and mousewheel up.
it has a maximum height, i’m using Eternity, it shows full image
Same for sync, upon clicking it also brings it to the perfect zoom.
First on my SearXNG instance
Thanks to the author of the post for reminding me about this series. I didn’t know there was a new season.
You and me both! Where is it showing?
Hulu.
Ty
And it just got renewed for two more seasons after this one. https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/futurama-renewed-season-13-14-hulu-1235776322/
From the article…
The official description for the new season states, “After a brief ten-year hiatus, ‘Futurama’ has crawled triumphantly from the cryogenic tube,
