Want to upgrade your F-91W? The open-source Sensor Watch is a board-swap that uses the same display, housing, and wrist-strap but lets you program your own functionality.
Woah, that’s cool.
That’s…surprisingly cheap!
Rolex has spent the last 50 years trying to rebrand itself as a luxury watch brand but they started out as sport watches. Essentially what this Casio watch is.
The people that designed Rolex watches wanted them to be basically indestructible. They’re wildly over-engineered. They have shockmounts so you can drop them without breaking the balance staff and most are waterproof.
That’s because Swiss precision is meaningless when a $1 chip can keep time better than a $6k mechanical watch. The only way they can survive is by selling the luxury angle.
I bought a mechanical watch cause I like how the second hand moves continuously instead of “ticking” and it doesn’t need a battery.
But yeah, if you want a watch that’s like the early Rolex’s today, buy a Seiko.Oh trust me, I understand. I own mechanical watches because there is a definite romantic appeal to them.
However, I have had more than one seiko automatic die from vibration while riding motorcycles. Even high end watches like Rolexes can have -4/+8 seconds per day timekeeping error and be within “normal” tolerances.
Meanwhile, a cheap digital quartz watch will typically be accurate to within a few seconds a month, even before we consider that many of them can sync to atomic clocks. They’re also pretty much indestructible.
I lost my Casio watch somewhere in my closet about 3 years ago (I am very lazy).
I still hear it beep every hour.
Maybe today is the day?
Nope, he just missed it.
Beautifully timed
place a marker halfway in your closet. every hour stand at the marker and see if the beep is to your left or right. Should be able to find it in <8 attempts.
Dude is lazy and you want him to stand up 8 times in a day?
the only alternative is to piss off your S.O. by asking if they’ve seen it and then they’ll find it instantly
Or your dad, if you’re my kids.
You guys are hilarious! There’s no way I’m going to search for it. That watch is going to find me before I find it.
And if it beeps on the same side no matter which way you’re facing, you might be wearing it.
Get what works. Fuck all those dick measuring contests.
Function over form!
I gave my wife a really nice watch made out of wood, with an aquamarine watchface, for her birthday.
She had wanted that watch for a long time before we even met, but couldn’t afford it.
Now it’s gathering dust on her nightstand cause she’s afraid she’s gonna forget to take it off before showering, so she’s wearing my old f91w instead.I love Casio watches; I’ve got about a hundred of them.
The F91W is most notable for being the cheapest, brand name watch you can buy just about anywhere. Even the poorest dirt farmer can afford to own one. And it has all of the features most people need.
That said, it’s not the best option for us westerners. They are very tiny watches, more suited to a child’s wrist than a grown man. A better option is a Casio G-Shock GW-M5610U. It’s solar powered with atomic timekeeping, meaning it never runs out of power and always has the correct time.
Plus, it’s way more durable compared to an F91W. If I could buy a watch for everyone on the planet, it’d be the 5610.
Nice try, but I could buy ten F91Ws for one 5610. Wouldn’t you rather have two watches on each limb AND two watches on your dick than one slightly fancier watch?
The real flex

Solar powered watches are a useless gimmick. The solar cell’s life span is shorter than 10 years, which is how long a Casio f91w’s battery will last.
And it’s not more eco-friendly either, cause it needs a rechargable battery which requires lithium.I literally have 20 year old solar powered watches that still work. And even if the cell dies in a 5610, it’s easily replaced. You can even do it as a user; they’re incredibly easy to work on.
And I love the overall convenience of solar/atomic. I don’t give a shit if it’s more eco-friendly or not :D
I bought an $11 accutron at walmart with a solar cell. It’s gone through the wash and dryer twice and it still works fine
They are very tiny watches, more suited to a child’s wrist than a grown man
As a grown man with child size wrists good I need more options. Most watches I looked at are huge on me. I got a Seiko 5 which fits well though.
As another man in the tiny wrist club, it’s truly heartbreaking to find out that watch that looks so good in pictures looks absurd when you put it on yourself. I really wanted a speedmaster but at least with the metal strap, it’s just too big.
F91W is a truly legendary watch though. It’s what I use 90% of the time although swapping the factory rubber wrist strap with a NATO strap is a worthwhile upgrade. The clasp on the factory strap really likes to break.
I also actually have a Seiko 5 too, very solid budget friendly automatics. Really big modding community too if you want to get into customization.
Yep, some people really need the smaller size. Personally, I’ve got an 8 inch wrist, and anything smaller than 42mm feels tiny on my wrist. I couldn’t physically wear a F91W as the standard strap is just too short to even fit.
The 5610 is great, but might be a bit pricey for some people.
If you’re looking for atomic timekeeping with a cheaper non-G-Shock Casio, try the WV-58A or the beefier WV-200R.
My wife is in the army. This is the watch that soldiers wear; it has every function you need, and absolutely none that you don’t, and it’s cheap as shit so you can afford it on your crappy military pay. It will not give a flying fuck what kind of abuse you put it through, and in a pinch it will probably stop a bullet.
I have the calculator watch one and absolutely love it. The reaction people have when they notice is priceless.
I like to imagine the rev/fwd buttons on this one is for the time travel function.
Reverse Time / Teleport Forward
Seems pretty close to me!
This one looks dope and definitely fancier than mine. I have the ca53w-1
The CA53 is pretty iconic though. It’s the watch thag Marty McFly wears in Back to the Future 2 and 3. It’s also worn bu Walter White in Breaking Bad.
That’s part of why I got it. I’ve seen it in media and thought it’d be cool to bring it to the real world
That one is actually very cool
Do you use the calculator often?
I do use it often actually. I find it a little bit more convenient than taking my phone out and opening the calculator app. But I also probably just do it partly for the novelty
I have never seen that in real life
It’s dope as hell
We’re still one of those planets that think digital watches are a neat idea.
I mean Garmin watches are pretty awesome
Yeah my Instinct is basically glued to my arm at this point. Solar charged. Can take a bath with it on.
Instinct solar gang. Love this watch.
Time is an illusion.
Lunchtime doubly so
https://www.watchesofespionage.com/blogs/woe-dispatch/casio-f-91w-the-preferred-watch-of-terrorists
I got this watch because it’s the preferred watch of terrorists. I like how light it is but the strap did break after not taking it off for a year. I think the oils in my wrist broke it down.
Same, bought one after going around trying to find a suitable Gshock with my mate. Coming across this bad boy and found out that people use this watch for a makeshift time bomb timer and terrorists use it because of how reliable it is.
Casio has a line of ladies watches with floral borders, I wear one as a man and get lots of compliments.
Ooh - do they have one in Hawaiian print?
Edit: Searching for “Casio Hawaiian Print” was fun.
That shirt goes hard, ngl
Dammit why do I love this.
The F91w: The Timepiece of Terrorism.
How did OP drop the watch if they never take that bad boy off?
Maybe OP dropped himself with the watch on
The amount of compliments I also got from the cheapest watch at a grocery store (also Casio)… I’ve seen listings for some really expensive ones with the same shape and general appearance but different colors and maybe features. Does anyone know what’s up with those?
Casio does variants of the same model with all stainless steel cases/bands for a bit more, but it’s usually the japan exclusive colorways that see prices north of $70 or so. Casios are usually pretty affordable!
$70 isn’t even expensive. Are people really fawning over sub-$100 watches?
I mean you read the post right? Anon is literally fawning over a $10 watch
This perception that cost=quality is so funny. It’s a tragedy that Jules Borel gave up on Mallards. Swiss movements in stainless cases, sold as a price-point piece. Peanuts compared to most shitass luxury watches of the time that used the exact same movement.
What watch, in your opinion, is worth the cost? I’d like something a little nice, but tend to only buy quality items so I don’t re-buy
Citizen has some quartz models for ~$60 if you’re looking in the right place. I see a lot of ebay sellers that are authorized vendors and are going out of their way with undercut pricing. Find something all stainless if you can, and go for a screw back if you want to replace the battery yourself. I work at a jewelry store and we get at least one person a month who’s ruined their watch by trying to do a battery change themselves.
If you want digital, Casio and Timex are both currently doing reissues of extremely functional vintage models.
I like the look of modern Seikos, but I’ve handled very few myself. In the past they were an absolute bitch to get parts for, but that may have changed.
Any modern mechanical watch should be absolutely avoided, unless you’re a connoisseur looking for a fancy-pants showoff piece. There’s a reason we’re all on quartz now lmao
They’re like $20 bucks now but totally worth the extra cost.
Square Casios are immortal.
Square Casios are immortal.
I feel like I can’t be the only person who had the rubber wrist strap snap after only a few years. It was really annoying because I didn’t wear it that much. And a replacement strap cost nearly as much as a new watch.
Yeah, you’re definitely not. Those rubber wrist bands/straps gotta be the worst part of these things, regardless of brand.
