I’ve never owned a car before in my life. I might need to one soon. Budget is $40k. Here are the things I’m considering:

  • I want to go all-electric
  • Not Tesla because fuck Elon.
  • Requires as little maintenance as possible.
  • Has the lowest environmental impact (both in terms of construction of the vehicle and in terms of energy use) as possible

Maybe a chevy bolt, mini’s ev models, or a nissan leaf.

If you’re fine with plug in hybrids, you could also look at prius prime. It has a 44 mile ev only range and switches to hybrid when the battery runs out.

Don’t take this as a fact but I think buying a not so old but not recent diesel might be the best choice. I have an old VW Golf 6 from 2010. All it requires is yearly service and thats it. It does around 5l/100km depending on where you’re driving and how.

Somebody needs to do the math but I think buying a used one makes the least amount of environmental impact vs a new one even if you take into account the worse efficency of older cars.

As for gas vs diesel vs electric, you gotta do the math yourself, I’m to lazy :)
