I’ve been doing research, and wanted to make a thread here to make sure I have all my information straight:

  • On X11, if you have two monitors connected, VRR won’t work, you have to tinker with display profiles as a workaround
  • Wayland doesn’t have the above problem, but has a lot of problems with NVIDIA GPUs, which is what I use. Wayland + NVIDIA doesn’t support VRR
  • Discord screensharing doesn’t transmit audio on X11, and on Wayland Discord screensharing just flat out doesn’t work unless you use third-party alternatives. I’m not sure if these alternatives allow for transmitting audio
  • Linux doesn’t support HDR. The most promising avenue for HDR is through Wayland, but there’s no real ETA for it

I have a cheap monitor for browsing, and an OLED TV for gaming/movie use. I like to stream games for a Discord group so transmitting my voice and the game audio is a must (it’s a whole “thing” for our group to stream weird-ass games and speedruns). Demanding the group to switch to Telegram/Twitch/whatever isn’t an option, I’m the only Linux user. I can swap out my NVIDIA GPU for an AMD one, but it seems like wasted effort if screen and audio sharing on Discord still doesn’t work.

Considering my unique situation (HDR multi-monitor setup + Discord streamer), should I just dual-boot with Windows 10 as my gaming OS and Linux as my browsing OS? Or can the Discord problem be reliably resolved and HDR is coming closer than I expect?
