I know this isn’t just Halifax related, but I think it impacts everyone in the province.

So I watched a council meeting in West Hants about wind farms (you can watch it here if you’re a masochist: ) and after hours of wanting to rip my hair out, I’ve come to the conclusion that NIMBY’s are going to be the death of this province. Basically a room of angry retirees (mostly) mad that they’ll see windmills and spouting crazy conspiracy theories.

Some highlights:

1:30:58: Person questions panel experts credentials, saying he’s lying about getting a PhD from the Royal Military College, talks about Nova Scotia power executives and shareholders getting money for some reason, then struggles to play her iPad because she’s wearing gloves (eventually gets it to work to play wind sounds), then incorrectly lectures a Mi’kmaq person about the story of Glooscap.

1:40:00: A couple from Ontario and Quebec moved here and now are angry because the province they moved to is supporting green energy.

1:42:10: Man rants about “wind turbine syndrome” (which is made up) causing nausea, insomnia, panic attacks, etc.

2:03:27: The EV market is failing and windmills have to be built so it’s not going to work (??)

2:16:00: Apparently climate change “has kicked my arse first hand out of anybody in this municipality.” She then tells the Mi’Kmaq rep that, even though she’s not First Nations, she whispered a prayer into some water and poured it onto the ground because she needed hope.

2:38:00: Man “with a chemistry background” says “ammonia doesn’t grow on trees, I know what goes into it.” (He does not.)

2:43:30: Woman mentions her dislike of rep from Membertou. “I just wanted to point out that our ‘Native’ member has had his back turned to most speakers on his phone the whole time, and it makes me not trust him.”

2:46:50: Father and son comedy duo? They grated on me so much I had to skip most of them.

3:28:30: Mr Wind Turbine Syndrome is back talking about an organization in Slovakian pushing for further setbacks and making more claims about health impacts from windmills.

3:53:00: “There’s a number of people around the world who appear to suffer from WTS and it’s not explained in any other way. When they leave a windmill site, they suddenly feel better. When they come home, hmm, in a couple of days they feel the same.”

I’m not sure what annoyed me more, the proud ignorance, blatant racism, or the fact that a handful of people might screw this province out of green energy.
