Hello, I’m mainly making this thread to possibly help some others out.
I have recently upgraded from:
- i7-9700k
- Asus ROG Maximus XI hero
- Corsair vengeance ddr4 3600 4x16gb
Upgraded to:
- a i9-12900k
- Asus ROG Maximus z690 hero
- Gskill Trident z5 ddr5 6400mhz 2x32gb
I have a asus 3060 12gb oc gpu that I used with the old mobo, connected VIA Riser Cable.
My issue was when I would be logged into the desktop, my computer would freeze up randomly. Sometimes a few seconds into loading up windows to up to 30 minutes no problem, unless under heavier loads. I checked each ram stick, the cpu, ram tests and everything seemed fine. I had also changed a few things in bios such as SPD settings and other bios settings, setting ram to 6400mhz, 4800mhz and default, tried auto, xmp 1&2, and manual settings, nothing worked. I then checked by running a game using the onboard gpu and no issue. I then tested my gpu without the riser cable. it turns out it was the riser cable causing the freeze ups. I’m sure it will be the same for most z690 boards. The issue with my riser cable is it’s a 3rd gen pcie, the slot in the motherboard auto recognized it as a 4th gen, and the gpu is also 4th gen. You can change the pcie slot to read as 3rd gen to fix this issue, but then you would be losing performance from the gpu. Also there are some 4th gen riser cables that will do this too.
TL:DR- If you are having this issue, plug your gpu into the pcie slot directly without the riser cable and see if it fixes your issue. If you want to use the riser cable, make sure your cable is 3rd or 4th gen first, then change the setting for the pcie slot to either one, not auto.
