YouTube has been testing a new way to show you ads that appear when you pause your video, and it feels pretty confident about them.
And with my ad blocker, I will never see them.
If I’m pausing a video it’s usually because I need to talk to someone and can’t have sound from an ad playing or I need to read something in the video and can’t have an ad on top of it.
These ads don’t have sound. They’re just a static ad. You can still see the video, it just gets shrunk and paused.
I mean, they still suck – but at least understand the thing you’re arguing about first.
“You can pause here to read the full post”
“No I fucking can’t, an ad for a dubious weight loss product covers it!”
That’s exactly what I was thinking as well. If I watch a more complex video about maths, programming, engineering or if a primary source is displayed for a second, then I pause the video to have a detailed look AT THE VIDEO, not to look at ads.
On completely unrelated news the use of adblocks and modded youtube clients have increased by 50%
What’s their definition of “traction” if people literally don’t have a choice?
Traction is a marketing buzz word, as though they’re trying to say “Our pilot project was a success because x number of people viewed our ads.”
But that’s completely meaningless because a) they didn’t choose to do so, and b) YouTube has no fucking idea if any of those people actually watched the ads or turned elsewhere until they were done.
I hate the modern world. I really do
Clickthrough rate?
And any study like this is incorrect. Adbockers haven’t caught them yet.
Lol ad block the shit outta them
If I pause a video, literally the only thing that is absolutely one hundred percent certain is that I’m not looking at the video. What a stupid idea.
Unless I’m following a tutorial, and pausing to look at the details. On a phone you can pause and pinch-zoom to get a better view.
Would be super annoying if an ad popped up right then.
I mean if it was instead of ads that inyerupt the actual video I’m all for it.
I suspect it will be as well as the other ads.
Read somewhere today that all these disruptive technologies basically undercut the conventional competition and then slowly become them.
We are full circle back to cable now. A hundred different platforms all trying to gouge you for every penny you can spare.
Next up google gets good traction tattooing brand names on the inside of your eyelids. Or advertising to you whilst you sleep, or go to the toilet.
Still, infinitely prefer that to paying a subscription to a service and still having to endure adverts.
