It is comedy gold to me that people in this thread think self-defense is somehow a “right wing” issue, like they forgot all of human history. A bunch of ignoramuses who never lived with measles refusing to vaccinate their children.

    Pure brain rot.

Politicos owner Axel Springer has a decades long history of breaking media thics code to push for right wing causes. So anything they write should be treated accordingly.

This has been known about for years, and unfortunately Ireland has never had an appetite to change it.

accuses the country of failing to uphold its responsibilities in safeguarding Europe’s northwestern borders.

Who do these military industrial complex shills expect to attack Europe from the northwest? Greenland? The fucking ocean? 🙄

Do I honestly have to tell you that many nasty things can indeed pop up from beneath the waves? That nuclear-powered submarines can travel vast distances without surfacing?

Ireland is nr. 3 in the EU in raw GDP per capita, bested only by Switzerland and Luxembourg. Yes there’s a lot of letterbox firms, it’s a tax haven, but even if you’d have to halve their number to correct for that, they’re still just as rich as the UK and France.

How has the invasion of Ukraine not woken you up yet? Do you live on a different continent?

Nope, but it’s still bullshit shilling for the MIC to demand that neutral to semi-neutral Ireland waste a shitload of resources on military conflicts that have nothing to do with them.

Yes there’s a lot of letterbox firms, it’s a tax haven, but even if you’d have to halve their number to correct for that, they’re still just as rich as the UK and France.

Yeah, that’s absolute horseshit. Ireland is NOWHERE NEAR as rich as the likes of France and the UK. The latter did their best to make sure of that for hundreds of years. National generational poverty from colonialism sucking a country dry doesn’t just happen in Africa, you know…

How has the invasion of Ukraine not woken you up yet? Do you live on a different continent?

The invasion of Ukraine, while of course awful and a cavalcade of war crimes, is NOT a reason to aggressively militarize the entire world.

I know that your establishment media is spinning it like it does (which is the case here in Denmark too), but a world already suffering from increasing inequality due to continuing rightwards political drift and the resulting robber baron since the turn of the millennium does NOT become more secure or more prosperous by everyone wasting more much-needed resources on their militaries.

“Neutral” to what, precisely? Ireland is one of only 8% of countries on this planet that are still considered full democracies, a number that’s rapidly dwindling as the authoritarians gain political ground. And you think Ireland should be “neutral” to the piecemeal extirpation of democratic civilization because, what, Russia and China and the fascists in the US and Europe will just leave Ireland alone?? That we shouldn’t have active deterrents? Nobody is asking Ireland to go to war. They’re asked to be able to defend themselves.

It sounds like Ireland isn’t producing any munitions or weapons and only has one boat in its navy that’s currently operational. Even if an attack isn’t expected in the NW side it’s clear that Ireland would be of no help to the EU in the event of an attack. Which unfortunately is becoming more of a reality. I think it’s safe to ask for some defense support, but obviously we don’t want countries to over militarize. There’s a fine line between a defensive military and an offensive military.

        Understatement of the year!

Ireland would be of no help to the EU in the event of an attack.

They wouldn’t be of much help if penguins mobilize to conquer Argentina and Chile, which is about as likely.

Which unfortunately is becoming more of a reality.

Nope. That’s not going to happen. You’ve fallen for the military industrial complex PR fearmongering.

I think it’s safe to ask for some defense support

Sure, it’s safe to ask, but it’s also wise for Ireland to say no. They have enough problems without wasting resources that are desperately needed elsewhere on unnecessarily enriching arms dealers.

obviously we don’t want countries to over militarize

Except that’s exactly what you’ve been arguing for until now and I suspect you’ll resume doing so in your very next sentence.

There’s a fine line between a defensive military and an offensive military.

Not really that fine, no. A defensive military is what’s needed to defend your own country and any vulnerable and undermilitarized country that you might be allied with.

Ireland, not being in danger itself and only being allied with overmilitarized countries, has already slightly exceeded that and is under no real obligation to provide for imperialist saber rattling.

I guess Ireland should reduce education, health care & housing funding, and put that money towards buying from Lockheed Martin right? /s
