The only way to get Europeans to stop smoking outdoors is to get rid of all the Europeans
Fair and balanced.
Why don’t we start by banning outdoor use of fossil fuels? :)
Because we can work on multiple things at one time and not whatabout everything
Forgot to add /s on my post. Sorry!
I was only aiming for the lulz because cities outdoor particulate matter or PM 2.5 is terrible, and mostly generated by cars. But their sales/ companies lobby are stronger than those of nowadays tobacco brands…
Yeah, or anything that directly targets treating avoidance of the whole global suicide notion.
I’m not sure how I feel about this, and I’m a non-smoker who hates cigarette (well, any kind of) smoke, and despite getting permanently nose-hit by CoVid, I can still smell cigarette smoke from miles away.
As much as it sounds lovely at first, this is restricting smokers way too much. If, as a European you find it ridiculous that you have to hide your alcohol bottle/flask/can with a paper bag in public in parts of the US, then this is even more restrictive. Apart from the dismissive answers to the question “Where should I smoke now”, the only typical answer is “at home”. Now, if these smokers live together with non-smokers then this is either forcing them to smoke under their nose or find the nearest place where it is allowed (good luck).
On the other hand, fuck yes. It is forbidden in bus/metro stops where I live, but not in the narrow, enclosed passageway leading out of the stop. Therefore, smokers get out of the train, start smoking as soon as they leave the stop (to be honest: right in the stop), and the two slow walkers right in front of me prevent me from overtaking, and the same is true behind me - so I have to inhale that shit while we walk along that long passageway. And not like it was much different on a busy pavement, in outside seating, etc.
I’d they actually disposed correctly of their cancer-sticks I would prefer to be a ban only on urban areas. But seeing how the entire floor is littered by the paper dildos, I think smokers haven’t shown they can responsibly smoke in non-urban areas. Fuck them.
This reminds me a little bit of judging any kind of social (or ethnic?) group by the loudest ones. You don’t see the decent ones not leaving cig butts. On the other hand, maybe it doesn’t even matter if there are people who still leave them.
But similarly to the prohibition era, I don’t think this will make smokers quit; this will just push the users to smoke/litter in less controlled areas. I hope I’m wrong.
We mock the USA paper bag because it works, and everyone knows what’s happening.
Now that you mentioned… you’re right, I always knew, even as a kid (I have only seen that in movies, though, which tend to make it super obvious anyway). In that case I didn’t use the best analogy.
fuck yes.
I’m a former smoker, I miss them like I miss my first true love. Every now and then I still go for my pack and its been 5 years. I STILL chew nicotine gum but stop being pussies and fucking ban cigarettes. Stop trying to nudge smoking into this shitty little niche, Stealing peoples liberties inch by fucking inch is a bitch move.
Either be willing to fight the fight with the addicts and big tobacco or not.
So, where exactly are smokers supposed to smoke then when pretty much everywhere indoor smoking is already banned??
At home, in private lodgings and dedicated smoking areas.
This is one thing once more which would be a non issue if it weren’t for the people who throw their stubs everywhere and blow smoke in the faces of others.
But how are you supposed to smoke at home when smoke detectors are required by law already and cigs keep setting them off? Not everybody lives in a gaff with a balcony or in a house with a garden behind.
Plus, I don’t like smoking at home either. Just glad I got a balcony for that.
That’s the neat part, you’re not supposed to smoke at all.
They can’t ban cigarettes outright, yet. But they can make sure it isn’t publicly visible, cool, or easy to do anymore.
Smokers are supposed to be forced into enclosed, limited rooms just for smoking, separating it from all other activities.
The goal is to break the cycle that gets young people to start smoking.Imagine having this attitude towards every other vice…
If said vice causes lung cancer I’m perfectly hapoy with that attidude.
I’d rather be near someone vaping than a drunk person.
The vaping I can walk away from, but a drunk driver could kill me.
I find public drunkenness to be more deadly and problematic than vaping, but that just my opinion regarding public health issues.
It’s not a competition. Banning one thing doesn’t require all other potentially worse things to also be banned first. Besides, in many places open drunkenness and drunk driving are already banned.
Show me the statistics of how many people got cancer from second hand smoke in outdoor areas. I’ll wait. Just make cigarettes fucking expensive, like in Australia. Make smokers pay more for health insurance. There’s so many good ways of handling the problem. Banning people from smoking outside is just fuel for all the fucking Nazis that would love to get rid of the EU. And it won’t change a fucking Thing. As if people would suddenly stop smoking outside when no one is around.
Then most certainly can ban it altogether, and as a smoker I wish they fucking would. Force my ass to not be able to buy them anymore.
I sure as hell don’t like breathing secondhand smoke while I walk down the street. If you want to breathe petroleum that’s on you but do it where you don’t give secondhand cancer to others, thanks.
Not really a non smokers problem to figure out your addictions short comings.
why don’t you like smoking at home, pray tell?
Your problem, not ours. Suffer over your own addictions
Smoke detectors don’t respond to cigarette smoke, unless you cram one smoker per m² in a room and have them all smoke half a pack, with all windows shut.
I have seen indoor parties at flats with smoke detectors, which never went off, despite heavy smoking indoors. Meanwhile something burning on the stove set off the detector, as it should.
Sounds like shitty smoke detectors to me.
I used to smoke heavily for years, was always too lazy to go out on the balcony, sometimes forgot to open the windows for days and my detectors only went off once when I vaped so heavily my apartment looked like a disco dance floor (from fog machines).just open a window, my dude.
That would let it outside. Illegal.
Maybe try to not smoke. No need to say thank you. Say it to your lungs.
I quit for several years and eventually started again, realising that quitting smokes is not for me. I’m living a fairly stressful life. I need my occasional 5 mins of peace and quiet every now and then during the day. Thank you very much.
What do you need smokes for peace and quiet for? Go look at a tree.
Says someone that doesn’t understand the first thing about smoking or nicotine addiction.
Says someone who thinks they know anything about my life.
The article says the focus is on kid-friendly outdoor areas like parks and near schools, which makes total sense as a place to start. Doesn’t seem like it’s everywhere outside being banned. And generally encouraging people to not take up smoking in the first place is wonderful. For people who smoke, quitting is the biggest thing they can do to improve their health.
This is a good compromise. I understand cafés wanting to be able to have their guests smoke at the tables on the street, and frankly if someone is walking the street at night by himself i couldn’t care less whether he smokes as long as the remains are put in the trash.
That’s the idea. They aren’t.
As much as I like the idea of getting rid of smoking altogether, this is a huge infringement on self-determination. Sure, go ahead and declare certain public areas as non-smoking zones. I’m absolutely fine with that. Even if it means that the entire inner city is such a zone. No one should have to inhale secondhand smoke. But if you’re somewhere where you don’t bother anyone, why should that be illegal?
Even if you’re alone, where are you throwing the butt? The answer is: the ground. The ground is absolutely full of cancer sticks. And I see the city’s cleaning machines clean the entire streets at least once a day. It’s still full of the things.
One sole cigarette butt contaminates around 800 litres of water. Just insane.
Back when I smoked I’d extinguish the cigarette and wait until I found a trash can. And I know plenty of people who do the same. Unfortunately plenty of other people don’t and it sucks.
The article uses the phrase “key outdoor areas” so I would assume this means you can’t smoke in a crowded plaza but you can still do so on your own balcony or whatever.
Nowhere; it’s bad for you and others

How about minding your own biz? :)
I would, but there are those asshats smoking near buildings forcing me to inhale their shit.
You mean cars?
Are smokers “minding their own biz” when I walk through a cloud of nasty carcinogens they they made?
Depends. I walk a good amount of meters away from anyone near bus stops or towards the designated smoking areas at train stations while I’m waiting for my public transport connections. Maybe you’re dealing with inconsiderate cunts in your area.
I have found basically all smokers are inconsiderate cunts. I had to put a no smoking sign in the window at the back door to my business because people from the bar next door are smoking near it and the smoke is drawn into my building through vents. Once the sign went up the smoking increased, I had to remove the vents. And now every day when I leave work there is a pile of butts at my back door.
Fuck smoking and inconsiderate cunt smokers. Smoke in your own house.
Something like that would be needed, except a fire extinguisher: https://youtu.be/TqIHlnfGKV0
Aaand blocked for being an insufferable asshat yourself. Cheers, mate! :)
I am definitely going to lose sleep over this one.
Unless you can walk away 10m+ (depending on if kids are there) you might want to reconsider smoking at all in those places
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11869-023-01435-9
That’s usually the amount of distance I take. I don’t like my wife or anyone else smoking near me either. Just be considerate, that’s all.
Nice to hear you take proper precautions. Second hand smoking gave me a chronic bronchitis and my cat asthma, so I’m more than aware of the risks.
they should get a person sized air tight box, get inside, smoke as much as they’d like. but they shouldn’t be allowed to open the box again because i don’t want that shit going outside.
Don’t, shit is nasty
I don’t know, sounds like their problem.
Picking up smoking is a conscious decision.
Where heroin addicts supposed to shoot some smack in their veins?
While they also look unpleasant, at least I am not forced to inhale their shit.
Frankly if smokers were more considerate I wouldn’t be that bitter.
And blocked. :)
You don’t need to announce every time you’re blocking someone, it’s a bit obnoxious to all the readers. I’m not going to moderate the insults at the moment but this thread is on the verge of being locked or whatever… and this is not meant to you. Everyone should try keeping it a little bit more civil. Chill, this is just a bit of news, no need to start a war between smokers and non smokers.
Cigarettes, sure, but including ecigs sounds unreasonable? I quit smoking couple of years ago and regular cigarette smell makes me gag but Iqos and liquid vapes are not that offensive outdoors.
Seems like it’s more about discouraging any tobacco use, rather than how unpleasant it is to others.
To be fair, ecigs don’t use tobacco. They may have nicotine added to the liquid, but no tobacco.
Wasn’t aware of that, so thanks for pointing it out, but yeah, what it’s really about is the nicotine. They want fewer people addicted.
Is alcohol still legal? Afaik at this point we have more evidence to the dangers of alcohol than vaping
There’s studies suggesting that vaping has a lot of negative effects as well, particularly on the lungs. Inhaling smoke or damps just isn’t great for one’s health it seems. Vaping also release a number of poisonous substances (propylene glycol and various aldehydes to name a few). Vaping also seems to increase your risk of cancer, but studying that is tough still because vaping is fairly new.
I wasn’t arguing it isn’t harmful. I’m just interested how there’s so much public effort to go after it but seemingly not alcohol even a bit.
Vaping is new, it’s more likely it can be stopped in its tracks now, compared to alcohol which is sadly ingrained into our culture for thousands of years now. Though I should say that in some countries alcohol usage is trending down as well.
Yes, but it’s also controlled and pretty well regulated in terms of what you can sell. E-cigs are not, or at least not enough, leading to the sale of devices which deliver nicotine in incredibly potent doses, which makes them very addictive (especially because nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in the world). Couple that with sleek packaging, and in some countries advertising which will be seen by kids, and you have a device which is creating a new generation of nicotine addicts.
Don’t get me wrong, vaping is generally healthier than smoking, and thus better for existing nicotine addicts. We should, however, be doing everything to avoid creating new addicts.
I think it is more about that drinking in public is legal in many countries (also in many it isn’t). So for the “discouraging” it should also be banned from the public equally.
In regards to “regulated what you can sell” You can also buy anything from 2,5% beer-mix stuff over 40-60% Schnaps and even up to 80% high destillate for cooking purposes. Which are still drunk by some alcoholics. Strong alcohol burns your throat away, but it is available on the market easily.
E-cigs are regulated in Europe, or more precisely e-liquids are, which is what determines the amount of nicotine rather than the device itself. Of course you can DIY liquids with stupid amounts of nicotine, but what you can buy off-the-shelf, including those terrible prefilled single-use e-cigs (which should be banned IMO) won’t deliver you more nicotine than regular cigarettes.
Nobody is talking about making vaping illegal entirely.
Alcohol already usually has restrictions on drinking it when walking down the street.
Sure there are some places (e.g. UK) where it isn’t, but even there local authorities have the power to forbid it if they want to.
Currently smoking doesn’t have this, and neither does vaping.
yes they are. i just want to breathe air.
Honestly I hate clouds of strawberry hitting me even more than regular cigarette smoke
Especially considering that every molecule of that sickly strawberry smoke was just inside that guy.
You’re always breathing in molecules that were just inside other people when you’re in public, even if they’re not in a visible cloud.
So? It’s a very pertinent reminder.
We all know fish shit, fuck, and die in the ocean, but if you’re swimming by the beach… Do you want me to finish the analogy?
I too would like to see cars banned but it’s just not practical yet.
doesn’t mean we shouldn’t start somewhere. fuck cars.
Frankly it should be completely illegal to privately own and operate anything motorized.
CALL THE COPS THEY’VE GOT AN ELECTRIC WHISK
They still affect air quality for others
There are obvious health benefits from making smoking as annoying as possible for smokers which will lead to long term medical cost decrease. Secondary smoke from ecigs outdoors is still neglible compared to cars, farts and people in general.
I still find it annoying personally.
It is not about annoyance it is about ease of consumption and indirect smoking which kills.
But for ecigs that doesn’t apply as much right? But yea I agree generally.
I find lots of things annoying outdoors but I guess it’s not so common here to become an issue. Ecigs users are usually conscious enough to keep distance from other people. I hear it’s getting pretty bad with disposable vapes but haven’t seen much of that myself, likely a perk of not living in a big city.
I’d prefer not to get second hand popcorn lung because people feel special exhaling way too much unregulated chemicals.
Ecigs are just as, if not more disgusting than regular cigarettes. Vape clouds tend to linger in the air a lot longer. And then there’s the fact that single-use vapes exist and it’s a fucking disgrace.
Ban cigs but not e-cigs says e-cig user.
Sounds like the onion 😋
I have only smoked regular cigarettes (quit 5 years ago after 10 year long addiction). Not sure why you assumed I use ecigs. I can only say tribalism is a cancer upon internet discourse.
O hate regular smoke smell, but weirdly I prefer it to flavoured e-smokes. My brain is telling me that that’s artificial as fuck and I should stay clear. And it’s right.
How about focusing on getting rid of diesel fumes first? That shit smells awful and is way worse for you than 2nd hand smoke or vapes.

There are too many people here that seem perfectly happy with the idea of altogether outlawing cigarettes, tobacco, and vaping.
Non smoker here, just came to say one thing: fascists!
Yah lets all smoke indoors or we’d be called names.
Smoking is now only allowed in your house
Hah true!

Huge reason no one goes to cinemas anymore is cuz you can’t vape in there as freely as you can at home.
I assure you, as someone who doesn’t smoke or vape, that is not the reason I don’t go to cinemas.
On the contrary, being trapped in a room with dozens of smokers or vapers would further discourage me from going.Removed by mod
