This image of an older white man helping a younger black man tie his tie (the younger man likely being on his way to some formal appointment based on his overall dress) makes the rounds every once in a while as a reminder to all of us as to the kindness we should aspire to. The story also typically includes that the woman in the red coat is the elder man’s wife, shielding the younger man from having everyone on the subway watch this rather intimate moment (although the photographer rather blew that out of the water). Regardless, it’s a lovely moment of kindness to view. (We can also debate the politics of appearance and social expectations as they relate to race and social class in general at another time)
