Starting with the tail end crossover from 2023 and Poor Things from Fox Searchlight. Oscar winning 4 of 11 nominations and grossing 115 million on a 35 budget. For 2024 new stuff…
- First Omen: one of the best horrors I’ve seen this year. Great reviews. Disappointed boxoffice but made almost 55 on a 30 budget. They get thumbs up for a good movie. It’s through 20th but happy to see them doing mid budgeted films.
- Kingdom of the Planet of the apes made 400 million. Hard to compare to pre covid times but a good solid showing. 20th.
- Young Woman and the Sea was intended as a Disney+ film but they gave it a limited release for award consideration. 88 RT
- Inside Out 2… huge.
- Kinds of Kindness from the director of Poor Things. A Searchlight release. Made 16 but just a 15 budget. It’s good to keep the good filmmakers in your pocket. Seemed like a small personal project for Yorgos.
- Deadpool Wolverine HUGE and
- Alien Romulus… Bam and Bam. More fox product but it’s now under the Disney banner. This reminds me why disney bought fox… because they forgot how to make original movies and needed more franchises. Sad.
- A Real Pain another fox/searchlight movie. Cost 3 has made 8 and lots of awards consideration.
- Moana 2: It’s awful but was meant to be a disney+ series so kudos for a probably close to one billion gross. Up to 800 million so far.
- Mufasa Lion King another awful one that looks like it’s gonna bomb. At least not do the billion they were expecting.
So Searchlight did well. Fox did well. Pixar did well. Disney films… meh.
This year disney fired the head of production and they upped the head of fox searchlight to head disneys live action division responsible for remakes and spinoffs as well as 20th films… so maybe that will bring in at least better sequels… but how bad will searchlight be hit? The guy has greenlit so many good originals.
