Hello folks,

This is my first post here. I was just wondering what kind of online services you would be interested in seeing a Canadian alternative for?

Thanks

I’d start with Internet. Actual Internet infrastructure, buy an actual independent party that’s not reliant on Robellus.

Banking thats not directly reliant on the big 3.

I understand, and appreciate the point and intent on the CRTC and the Canadian financial system protections. But the consumers get fucked as a result of them as well. At some point, the gates have to get opened here, somehow.

Banks used to pay us interest. Now they soak us in fees, reporting billions in quarterly profits, under government protection (and let’s not kid ourselves, they are the government). Ditto for the communications system.

That’s sweet! Hopefully they expand out west. That’s the problem with our country, don’t think I can’t appreciate that it’s a capital sucking nightmare to invest in infrastructure creation here. I get it. But there’s gotta be some middle ground, somewhere.

More ISPs, there is one independent ISP left in Ontario and they are getting murdered by Bell/Rogers.

    Small farms.

Nova Scotia as an example. We do not have large farms like central and western Canada. Most are small family run operations. For the past 8 years Nova Scotia farms have been in the red. They’re closing at unprecedented rates and locally grown food is becoming harder and harder to find. An entire province that may soon not have any ability to produce food.

    No farms. No food.

Not online services but I agree…

Definitely need more small farms everywhere. Food wise here in Alberta we have a good selection I find. Greenhouse grown produce, field grown veg, lots of beef, pork and poultry too. But we need more of these producers.

I find we do not have enough fruit (we need orchards!) though.

I would also like to see more dairies and especially yogurt and cheese makers. Cheese is really not a big deal. I know small cheese makers in Europe that employ 3-5 people and crank out 2 dozen different cheeses year round.

Probably going to get flak for this, but AI and cloud.

We have cheap power, we have some of the best researchers, and regardless of personal feelings there are lots of people greeting high value out of AI.

I know we have Cohere but it’s really like them to take up the consumer space and mindshare.

Right now as a country we are pretty much 99% dependent on US tech platforms.

If Trump signed an executive order to Google, AWS, Cloudflare, and Microsoft to stop providing cloud services virtually every company in the country would be dead instantly. No email to communicate, no servers to provide services, no files since they’re all in clouds.
