Someone in my high school once said: “you know what I hate? When you get some apples, and some milk.” He works at the grocery store so I still see him sometimes. All of my friends mention this occasionally. I’ve also told my kids about it. Once every few days one of us will ask the others: “you know what I hate…?”

We don’t know why he hates apples and milk and we’ve never told him that he’s a celebrity among us. I’ve thought of going up to him at the grocery store while holding some apples and milk, shaking my head, and saying: “I just hate this.” He also carded me once even though we were in the same class. Once when my family was driving away from the grocery store, we saw him walking nearby. My spouse rolled down the window and was about to start shouting about apples and milk but thankfully I got us away in time.

I thought that I had been a liberal but never really a passionate anti-communist, that I had always been kind of okay with communism, but then I randomly found a Facebook exchange I’d had with a communist in college back in 2009 where I asserted that Cuba was doomed to imminent collapse. It was embarrassing. I had unconsciously blocked that one out basically. The reality is that to be a liberal is to be an anti-communist.

I started a liberal club in high school lol and nobody came.

When Trump won in 2016 I burned out my car battery because my phone was plugged into it and I was constantly refreshing the results, willing them to change. I was overseas teaching so this was in the afternoon.

I ran in local elections as a Democrat several times. I lost the first few times because I was a Bernie Democrat but after I actually won and ended up at the table and saw who I was sharing that table with (a bunch of fucking Nazis) I resigned. By then the pandemic had started.

There are probably many many many more embarrassing liberal incidents from my life.

I’ve read and enjoyed 1984 two or three times. I read Animal Farm, Down and Out in Paris and London, Homage to Catalonia (about half of it), Burmese Days, plus a book of his essays, his writing advice, etc. Orwell sucks but I agree with the other commenter here saying that there is just something about 1984. I don’t know. I took another look at Brave New World recently and thought that it was just eugenicist crap. I haven’t looked at 1984 in at least ten years so maybe my opinion would change if I did.
