You could also use fossil as SCM, it is small, a single executable and has a wiki (and bug tracker) in it, so you could keep your documentation and code close together

What about creating a dedicated thread for that and for every release, all contributors are listed and appreciated. Additionally there could be a static text that mentions all the other volunteer’s who contributed and helped indirectly
Maybe wrap it up as ide addon for the common IDE’s e.g. IntelliJ or VSCode?
