sugarfoot00@lemmy.cato Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Here's what a Brazilian restaurant owner did after city hall banned sidewalk patio tablesEnglish10·3 天前In a lot of Canadian cities, seasonal patios like that are super common. Patio season is limited and Canadians love eating outdoors when the weather is good, but it’s obviously 3 season infrastructure in a country like Canada.
Keeping the sidewalk clear isn’t really an issue, since nobody wants to have foot traffic buffeting their table. In some cases, the patio takes up the sidewalk, and the sidewalk is diverted around the patio with a wooden boardwalk. It’s so common that there are businesses that do nothing but supply pop-up patios for businesses.

And it’s not like it’s the Canadian government that is banning Canadians from travelling south or boycotting all nature of American products. It’s actual Canadians that have made those choices.
sugarfoot00@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•Trump thinks Canadians ‘nasty’ for avoiding U.S. travel, banning booze: ambassadorEnglish5·4 天前It’s not that we’re sensitive. But if you know any Canadian history, what Americans laud as ‘manifest destiny’ has always been a threat to Canada. Hell it’s the reason Canada exists in the first place. So it’s not like Trump just pushed one of our buttons. Unknowingly, he pushed the button.

But I also recall people having problems getting registration with extreme limos coming from the US. So it seems to be a bit willy nilly. It varies by province.

That’s the way that Canada and Mexico are planning anyways. We just need a bit of runway to unwind generations of trade.
sugarfoot00@lemmy.cato World News@lemmy.world•Photos: The Scale of China’s Solar-Power ProjectsEnglish17·13 天前There’s actually research that shows that farming under solar cover increases moisture retention and the crop yields of certain plants. You’ll also note that a lot of these installations are on marginal land- steep hillsides, arid land, and even floating on reservoirs. The latter slows the rate of evaporation from the reservoir as well, so it has a net environmental benefit.
You’re right though, not every installation is perfect. But we seldom ask these same questions when it’s a new housing development or a Walmart with a moat of paved parking around it.

sugarfoot00@lemmy.cato Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Today, the Mexican Government introduced its new chocolate bar, priced at less than $1USD. Made of 50% cocoa, powdered milk, vanilla. No refined sugar, no artificial flavourings.English341·14 天前I would presume it’s because they’re low in sugar. Due to exploding diabetes rates, Mexico has been making a concerted effort in the last few years to stem the consumption of sugary foods, drinks and snacks, particularly amongst kids. You can’t have a cartoon mascot on a box of cereal, for example. They put big stickers over Tony the Tiger before changing the packaging completely. And the cost of snack foods has skyrocketed, making it largely unaffordable for lots of Mexican families. A bag of chips there costs more than it does in North America.
My guess is that this is part of that effort.
After 30 years of marriage, my wife floated the idea of turning this on. I looked at her like she had two heads.
