“Starting 11 March 2024, the price of Ring Protect Basic will change from £34.99/year to £49.99/year per device. If you would like to keep your current plan, no further action is required. Your plan will renew at the new price, unless you cancel your subscription before your next renewal on or after 11 March 2024.”

Because having a video doorbell is incredible and the vast majority of people don’t have the technical know-how for a DIY solution nor the funds for a professional one.
I’ll stick to HA and Amcrest myself but the pros outweigh the cons for anyone who fits the above description
Video doorbell that’s videos are shared with everyone from police to your crazy aunt no questions asked
Yeah and most people don’t care because they don’t have other options and the convenience of having your front door monitored remotely is worth it.
Also most people buying those products probably don’t even know how creepy they’re
… don’t even know how creepy they’re[.]
Man, I love Lemmy. Never mind the discussion; even our grammatical errors are high-quality and interesting compared to compared to the ones in mass-market social media.
Apparently, ending a sentence with a “weak form” like that is called a “stranded clitic.”
Like the person on that page noted, sentences like yours roll off the tongue with all the grace of a moose in a tutu. But oh well, it is what it’s.
Thanks, that’s the kindest way someone has ever corrected my language
Yeah, but I’d also say that most of them won’t be affected by the privacy breech either.
My mom’s in the market for one of these door bells. Would you recommend an Amcrest for someone with no tech know-how?
Unfortunately I’m not sure. I know Amcrest has its own app and ecosystem but Home Assistant users like them because you can bypass all of that and use your own software
Funny, the cost of my dvr security still costs me 0 per month.
Yeah same. Although we use Lorex which I think is proprietary and connects to their servers but if something ever happens, I can probably hook it into my nas and run it there.
I had a lorex and thought the same until my Internet went out and I wasn’t able to access the cameras I’m my own house even though the lan was up and running.
My lorex functions with internet cut off. It just goes to the drives installed in the dvr. Don’t know what happened with yours. Maybe I got an older version
These companies love raising prices and doing nothing in return.
Fucking Amazon seems to be the worst lately, who happens to own Ring. I have a Blink system which they own too which I guess will be getting raised as well with no added benefits to me.
They raised Prime and included ads and removed free features from my Echo to later sell back to me in a plan. I loved having Alexa listen for glass breaking or smoke alarms but that now costs money for absolutely no fucking reason.
I’m getting rid of my Echos for this reason. It’s fucking bullshit and I canceled Prime and Prime Music because I will not pay for this shit. I want them to hurt for pulling this crap on people.
I plan to also get rid of this Blink system too before they start fucking me over there as well. I wasn’t thrilled with any of the non cloud systems, but looks like that’s my best bet for the future so I can quit getting fucked over by rising costs that add no extra benefits to me.
Lemme check the bill for my HA install…
I inherited a Ring but never paid the subscription because subscribing to a doorbell is ridiculous. Recently replaced it with a Reolink PoE and it’s so much better.
