    The actor playing Blackthorne isn’t quite what I imagined. He’s got a very puppy dog face and looks perpetually confused. But it works and he’s been great. The show has been really good about decentering him too and giving significant screen time to the Japanese characters, especially the women who get very little in the book. It doesn’t over exaggerate themes from the book like how they only have two lines about John bathing/not bathing instead of going “England is full of fleas and disease and we sleep on hay, but Japanese people are so pure” a dozen times. Lot more showing and not telling, such as the single scene where you see

    Mariko doing a translation while the words are still being said to her, which iirc only her and the priest are able to do.

    Overall, I think its better than the book and way less orientalist fetishizing.
