Every time I think reactionary country music can’t get worse, it does. My least favorite thing is when the song gets prefaced with “listen I’m just a simple man but” like We Shall be Fre by Garth Brooks, or that Alan Jackson 9/11 song.

My least favorite one of all time is “Most people are good” by Luke Bryan. Liberals at the time liked it because it does have surface level lyrics about love and equality and all that, but it’s an insidious white conservative view.

I hate how none of these songs are specific either. They dance around things and say vague things like “the world’s gone crazy” without outright saying what they mean. Punk music is far more direct and that’s what I dig about it. Like the Dead Kennedys had songs like “Let’s Lynch the Landlord” and lyrics about Jerry Brown (by name) being a fascist.

I’m learning guitar with the hopes of one day being able to write music that brings country back to its roots as anti status quo music of the proletariat and oppressed

One thing I think people don’t talk about enough is how not only are the lyrics terrible, the song is annoying to listen to. Oliver Anthony cannot sing, and his voice is grating as he whines his way through the song.

I like Rich Men North of Richmond. Much better than most country these days. It’s just a guy with a decent voice and his guitar, talking about his regular life and the life of people around him.

If the lyrics were leftist instead of chud no one here would be saying it’s bad

      lol

Yeah, if the lyrics weren’t reactionary they would be good. You can say that about every bad song though. Like what if bad….was good!

A lot of reactionary media is just bad though, totally independent of the political messages. Like those kids cartoons Prager U puts out are just hot garbage, even if they were sending a leftist message they’d suck cuz the animation and writing are just terrible.

lol like that’s a hard bar to clear. There are FAR better country artists today that don’t have reactionary lyrics like Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson and Margo Price or even a mainstream act like Chris Stapleton. Anthony is crap and ignoring a huge aspect of it isn’t going to change anything.

          over produced to hell

As someone whos worked as an engineer my whole life, Overproduction in the context of music that’s supposed to be can be good sometimes i-think-that

Like there’s an art to it, I understand it not being everyone’s cup of tea but I like often respect and like it. That said I don’t much care for modern country in general so I don’t have much of a dog in this racd
