Bringing it up from cold in the pot uses so much gas. I guess next step would be cooking the pasta in the kettle and then pouring it out to serve

Yup same, kettle water to pot, bring it to a rolling boil then pasta in. Bringing it up from cold in the pot uses so much gas.
